Hitting the bar so minimum stakes Sunday
Frustrating Saturday trying to build up some ammunition for next week.
Starting with the good news I did back Mums Tipple in the Lady Wolfruna Stakes at Wolverhampton. I was at York the day this horse won a 2 year old sales race so easily that the owners received huge (rumours of £500k plus) offers from the likes of Coolmore and Godolphin. They bravely turned them down and since then Mums Tipple had been pretty much useless - so much so that he has suffered the operation which means he will not be heading to the breeding sheds. There was though a bit of potential in his first run this season at Lingfield and I backed him at 4/1 Friday evening as anything near a repeat of the York run would see him win.
Worryingly Mums Tipple drifted before the off but Ryan Moore at his very best got him home, getting up a shade tidily at the end. As I still get BOG at Bet365 the 9/2 was a welcome bonus. I rather suspect the market will overreact to this long overdue victory and will probably look to oppose him next time.
I then hit the bar twice with horses which traded odds on running - Oski in the 3.27 at Hereford and Up The Straight in the 3.35 at Sandown, the latter being the victim of an excellent Charlie Deutsch ride. He is just about the best judge of pace in the business these days.
Gladiateur Allen plugged on in the glue (1.50 Sandown) for a reasonable each way return on the 20/1 odds from the night before, but all profits were were wiped out by the flops-
2.40 Wolverhampton: Zwayyan - had won the same alleged Lincoln trial (most of the participants do not run in the Lincoln itself and this is run round a tight bend on the all weather, while the Lincoln is a straight mile on turf) 2 years ago. This time it was held up at the back and stayed there throughout.
3.00 Sandown: Alexandra Romanov - got loose before the race and never better than mid division
4.37 Hereford: Strike Hollow - last, and the only Venetia Williams runner not to win in the last week.
Just two bets today.
An old favourite of mine Roseisaroseisarose in the 2.37 at Warwick. The trainer, Katy Price (no not her), won this race 2 years ago with a 33/1 shot and am taking a chance she will do so again.
Vina Bay 4.33 Lingfield. I rate the form of Vina Bay and Albert Camus about equal, but the former is 4/1 and the latter 11/8. The price discrepancy is probably on account of the respective trainers, Sylvester Kirk and John Gosden. Vina Bay is a solid bet at that price (alternatively lay Albert Camus and have the field running for you).
